8888 Art Installation, Cambridge

Art installation in Cambridge field by Inclume Architects

Playful interactive summer architecture pavilion as part of a local festival of ideas, constructed from 8,888 white translucent spheres.

The expansive natural landscape backdrop contrasts with the man-made appearance of the installation to create an exciting artistic tension. The repetition of the spheres provides an ethereal appearance, with the overall form changing when viewed from different directions. Viewers were encouraged to make up their own minds about the pavilion’s concept.

The architectural pavilion sits on slender timber supports which blend in with the grassy landscape and lift it to a suitable height for viewing and interaction. These give the installation a light footprint and enable children to weave underneath, as well as between the different elements.

During the hours of darkness the pavilion transforms to become an illuminated beacon.
