The Living Planet Installation, Cambridge
Architectural paper art window installation at the Clayton Hotel, Cambridge.
Our proposal for the Cambridge Window Wanderland 2023 tells a story of ‘The Living Planet’, creating a colourful spectrum of paper animals arranged across two window fronts at the Clayton Hotel in central Cambridge.
The installation takes reference from land animals, through a varied range of green shaded tones emanating from a central core.
Delicate handcrafted origami was used to add depth, not only to the animals themselves, but to give an overall three-dimensional effect when arranged in a circular form. Earth, life and totality are represented by the circle. These polygonal forms provide a backdrop for light, casting varied shadows throughout the day and night, from the sun and internal illumination of the building.
This playful take on the theme ‘The Living Planet’ encourages passers-by to pause and take interest in the installation. It aims to act as a reminder that we as humans sometimes get distracted by our urban surroundings, often unaware that we share the planet with around 8.7 million species of plants and animals!
We welcomed visitors to count the different types of species in each window and spot how many they can find.
