Lemon Gallery, London
Proposals for a new gallery space in central London.
The Lemon Gallery will provide a collective space for start-up artists and designers to exhibit their work in a light and spacious contemporary environment.
Situated in a disused warehouse building, the proposal will convert the ground floor area into a working gallery, with future plans to refurbish the floors above into workshops for the designers and artists. This will form a hub of expertise and collaboration for the artistic profession. The building will contribute to the regeneration of the local area, placed alongside residential units, workplaces, shops and cafes.
Architectural elements include a large pivot door which forms the opening to the gallery, providing spacious access for exhibitions and events and creating a connection with the street. The raw elements of the patinated metal frame and texture of the fluted cast concrete form a sympathetic contrast to the existing building fabric that will age gracefully over time.
The entrance pivot door is a large door that is mounted on pivots rather than hinges. This allows the door to swing open in a smooth, fluid motion, creating a dramatic entrance to the gallery space. The door is made of a combination of metal and glass, with sleek, modern lines that perfectly complement the gallery's aesthetic. Next to the entrance to the gallery there will be a fluted concrete detail, which adds texture and visual interest. The fluted concrete creates a sense of depth and shadow, drawing the eye towards the entrance and highlighting the door as the centrepiece of the design.
Inside the gallery, visitors are greeted with a spacious, light-filled interior that is perfectly suited to showcasing works of art. The walls and floors are finished in neutral polished tones, creating a clean and unobtrusive backdrop that allows the art to take centre stage.
